Chapter 4 - The Shelter of Hope

I proudly present Chapter 4 of the Wormworld Saga Digital Graphic Novel!

Go read it at wormworldsaga.com!

Chapter 4 marks a very important point for me. From the very beginning of the project I was hoping that I would make it to this point. We find out about the old legends of the Wormworld. The Wormseal is finally explained and we get the first hints on why this world is called the 'Wormworld' anyway. And we find out about Jonas' mission and the obstacles that he's facing.

In that regard Chapter 4 is really a starting point for the story. From this point Jonas will venture into the Wormworld, trying to cope with his impossible task. He will visit the most wondrous places and meet many new characters and creatures. I can't wait to continue the story and I hope so can't you.

As I previously announced, we've got a double launch this time. With the new chapter we've also started a new kickstarter campaign! Now, did you see THAT coming?

I say "we" because I would never have been able to tackle this alone. It's my wife who did the lion share of the work associated with this campaign and it's my wife who will maintain the ongoing development of the fan items and of what ultimately will become the "Wormworld Shop" on the website.

I'm really proud of the items that we've developed for this campaign and I hope you'll like them, too. Of course we've got some of the usual stuff like the shirts and the cap but I even love those because I'm wearing T-shirts and a cap all the time and can't wait to dress up correctly for this year's Frankfurt bookfair. I LOVE the Loki plush into which we really invested much time and care until we had the final result. It's a truely high quality product that we intentionally produce in Germany and not in China like so many others do. My personal highlight is the sword. It's a very cool feeling to hold it and feel its weight and texture. It's the Wormworld Saga coming to life!

And speaking of that! When you have watched the kickstarter video all the way through you've had the first glimpse on something that I'm really looking forward to share with you. It'll be revealed as soon as we reach the funding goal of the kickstarter campaign.

  2. Nice as usual!

My favourite piece of art: the sunlit island temple of Janaka. The mandala looked good as well.
The inhabitants and their general aesthetic is inspired by India, right?

I note that Jonas' clothes partake in his invincibility - or is that only while he's wearing them?

It's a tough deal, having to save an entire world before even entering puberty... I'm curious as to how our hero will actually go about doing so. Immortality is a plus, yes, but it is in itself no guarantee for victory.

I had to look up "endued" in a dictionary. "endowed" and "imbued" are words I've seen used, meaning roughly the same thing, and I thought for a minute there that you'd accidentally used half of each word.

It ends on something of a cliffhanger. A flashback to the incident that led to Jonas' fear of fire, I assume?

Looking forward to the next chapter :)

    1. Thanks for your detailed feedback! I actually love the fact that we've arrived at a point where we finally are able to talk about the story. What do you fear - and why - if you are immortal? This is a central aspect of the story. I'm fascinated by irrational fears like Jona's phobia of fire. And I love to put him in front of what to him must look like an impossible task although everyone around him is absolutely sure that he will do it.

  4. I love the Wormworld Saga. I can't always wait for the next part. So therefore I read the chapters several times. With the history and your pictures U start somethin in me, that makes the child in me alive, too. :o)

Please do keep it up. and I'll buy the book of course. ;)

Btw: When I read the comic, I always hear the album "Illusions" by Thomas Bergersen. Titles such as "Homecoming" or "Remember me" perfectly suits the charakter of the early chapters and a lots of the other stuff makes me actually feel the later chapters.

  7. Wow wow wow!!! This chapter was bursting with creative energy and once again it blew me away. I have been learning about the Wormworld Saga for the past two months only, and it has completely mesmerized and amazed me.

When my girlfriend was horrendously sick, I chose to read her some of your chapters and it made her feel much better.

I can see a passionate, unstoppable vision in your comics and wish there were more artists like you in the world of graphic novels. The solidly defined characters, aesthetic and beautiful art work and seamlessly running story arc inspire me to work on my own creative projects.

I cannot express enough how powerful the impact of these stories is and wish you much luck and joy in your future ambitions for this story. Thank you for reminding us that every adult has a child's adventurous spirit at heart.

  9. Well done. Now we are getting somewhere, but I want more now. :) As soon as he started talking about the elements being called I was thinking, where is fire? Nicely set up. I LOVE that last image. Have you put any of these together as desktop wallpapers? That would be a great one. I actually took a screen cap from chapter 3 and made it into a desktop at work, turned a few people onto Wormworld doing that.

I was curious about your equipment. What kind of Monitor you use, version of photoshop, and type of Wacom Tablet. (Though judging by the video I think I know what kind of speakers you have, if Logitech then the same as mine haha)

Anyway, fantastic job on the new chapter, as good as it is I feel it is setting up for an even better one. I am getting some money from some free lance art im doing, Im thinking of donating some to you. I can decide what I want, the Sword or Adventure Bag. Decisions decisions.

    1. The speakers are the real secret of my workflow! :) Apart from that I'm using a Wacom Cintiq 21UX as monitor and an Intuos5 L for painting (yes, I know: why not using the Cintiq for painting? I just like the classic tablet better right at the moment). I'm using Photoshop CS5 although I've subscribed to the Adobe Creative Cloud and will do the jump to CS6 soon.

    2. Id love to get my hands one the Cintiq (They use your illustration in the 12WX display video, I just noticed.) I've been using the same Wacom tablet for over a decade.

Oh, one other question I was interested in. What resolution do you paint these in?

    3. My target resolution is 1024 width and I work in triple resolution so the typical full width panorama is painted in 3072px width.

  11. I really love the new chapter and can't wait until the next one... hope it is soon? ;)

However, one thing is still bugging me:
As a Comic-Collector, I would like to buy it also in real paper, best would be in a trade-Paperback (so it looks nice with other books). Is there an update on a real comic plan? If so, I would really directly buy every chapter as soon as it is available (apps do not have the same feel :p)

    1. The German book is coming in October and I hope to be able to sell the book rights to foreign publishers on this year's Frankfurt Bookfair. Of course I will keep you all updated about that as I know that there's a lot of interest in a printed version of the Wormworld Saga.

  12. Absolutely great!!!
I'm the outrageous Anonymous who criticized the way of storytelling of the last chapter a bit.
Now it's pefect - the direct speech is much more efficent to get swallowed by this wonderful world.
I'm impatently looking forward to the next chapter.
